Oprah Winfrey is one of the most influential women in the world. This is the success story of the "Queen of All Media" and her amazing road to success..

She is widely famous for her globally viewed talk show; The Oprah Winfrey Show- the highest rated talk show of all time. She is also famous for being a successful producer, actress and philanthropist. She has been ranked as the richest African-American of the 20th Century and the highest contributing black philanthropist in U.S history. Here is her success story.

The Early Days

She was born in 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi and had a rough childhood and adolescence; she was sexually abused by her male relatives. She moved on to live with her father in Nashville and pursued her studies at Tennessee State University and started her career as a TV and Radio broadcaster.

In 1976 she started with her own chat show People are Talking and after being such a great hit she was hired by Chicago TV to host her own morning show AM Chicago which went from last place to top of the ratings chart.

In 1986, The Oprah Winfrey Show was launched and gradually reached an audience of 10 million people, with Oprah earning an estimated $30 million. Her current net worth is estimated at $3 billion.

Building on Success

Talk shows in the mid nineties were becoming even more scandalous but Winfrey promised to stay away from sleazy topics, and even though this made her ratings fall at first she managed to earn respect and fame for being her authentic self.

She became highly influential in the publishing world by creating Oprah’s Book Club, adding it as a segment in her show, which easily brought reading to the forefront of our society. Her business debut was with Oxygen Media in 1999 which is a company dedicated to producing Internet programming and cable for women. A year later she releases her popular monthly magazine, O: The Oprah Magazine and soon signed a new contract to continue her highly successful talk show until 2011.

As previously mentioned, Winfrey is known for her philanthropic endavours. In 2012 she gave away around $400 million to educational causes and in 2013 she donated $12 million to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Apart from creating Oprah’s Angel Network she also gave her time and money ($40 million) to develop the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in Johannesburg.

Oprah Winfrey is not just a highly successful woman, but she is also one of the most inspirational women in history. One of the major lessons she teaches everyone is that no matter how challenging your life is at the beginning, it has no bearing on how you finish.
