Nothing says luxury vacations like being able to go on holidays in a place that is reserved for the rich and famous. And the Sea of Stars is just that.

Anyone who’s ever visited the Maldives would agree with me when I say that the Maldives are heaven on Earth. They are not only exotic and luxurious, but they can also make you feel as if you are in a land millions of light years away from the real world.

And that’s especially true when you are on holidays there with your significant other and that is precisely the reason why the Maldives are the most luxurious honeymoon destination. They offer exclusive living on water, water sports and spas; everything a couple on their luxury vacations honeymoon they could desire.

But the Maldives aren’t just about luxury hotels and stunning beaches. They are also unique because they offer unique spectacles that you can only come across on such exotic places.

The Sea of Stars on Vaadhoo Island in Maldives is one of just those unique spectacles and if you are planning your Maldivian luxury vacation you should definitely make a point of witnessing this truly spectacular phenomenon.

This unbelievable effect occurs due to a natural chemical reaction known as bioluminescence. The marine microorganisms that cause this effect are called phytoplankton and their blue luminescence occurs as they produce toxins that are harmful to fish, humans and other creatures. It’s believed that the phytoplankton’s blue glow is a defence mechanism that’s supposed to ward off other marine organisms from eating them. Even when eaten by other fish, the phytoplankton will continue to glow which in turn will make bigger predators go after these fish as the glowing phytoplankton inside them will make them visible to bigger fish.

This biochemical process does not just occur in the Maldives as there are many places around the world where you can catch glowing waves. For example, the same phenomenon has been known to occur in California and Puerto Rico, to name just a few. And of course, phytoplankton is not the only marine microorganism that produces this glow as many other marine life forms, such as squid and anglerfish, have also been known to glow in the dark.

However, the phenomenon is most prominent in the Maldives as the islands grow dark at night and the starry sky is extremely visible so the blue luminescence in the water will make you feel as you are truly in a sea of stars.

Where to Stay

Although the phenomenon is not restricted to just Vaadhoo island, it’s more visible there, so if you are trying to plan your holiday around the Sea of Stars, make sure that you look for accommodation on Vaadhoo island or close by. The phenomenon occurs round the year, so there aren’t any restrictions regarding that.

If you are looking for a luxury resort to stay in you needn’t look further than the Velassaru. The Velassaru is a luxury hotel which in Maldivian fashion offers accommodation on water. The luxurious water bungalows of this hotel come equipped with their own private pool so you’ll be able to make the most of your days on the island, while you can witness the spectacular Sea of Stars phenomenon from the luxury of your own water bungalow. Prices for the water bungalows start at $1,321 per night.
